Blog 1 - Introducing IoT FarmBeats

Hello everyone, we are team 28 for the UCL COMP0016 module. Welcome to our first blog! It has been a couple of weeks since we started Systems Engineering, and we are excited to share our progress with the project.

We have been allocated to work on Microsoft IoT Farmbeats, which centres around embedded systems, sensors, AI analysis and computer vision. Our client is Avanade, an organisation partnering with Microsoft, which are looking into solutions that can help increase the efficiency and yield of farming processes.

Between weeks 3 and 4 of the term, we met up in person for a team meeting to get to know each other before discussing the project. We set up a Whatsapp group chat, discord server as well as a GitHub repository to allow us to communicate and share resources in the future. We talked briefly about each of our background experiences in Computer Science to get an idea of each other’s strengths and weaknesses, so that we can allocate tasks to members who are most capable of completing them. We also emailed to arrange a meeting with Fergus, the Engineering Lead in Avanade, to further discuss the project.

We were introduced to Avanade and gained more background knowledge of our task in our first client meeting. Fergus explained how he would like us to creatively explore different ways of using technology to improve farms, and that we should start broad and eventually narrow down to one idea that will become the main focus for our portfolio. Our task for the week was to research existing technological solutions linked to farming and agriculture, and see if we can build upon them, or if we can come up with something new.
